What is OCPP, and how does it affect charging safety?

OCPP is a communication standard for charging stations

The Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) is an open industry standard that defines how charging stations communicate with central management systems. It allows stations from different manufacturers to be monitored on the same software infrastructure.

What it means in practice for users

An OCPP-compliant station reports a fault to the central system in real time when it occurs, typically auto-generating a work order. This means the field team can be aware of the issue without the user having to separately report it by phone.

The safety and transparency dimension

Using a standard protocol ensures that power delivery, session start/stop events, and fault reports are logged consistently and traceably. This strengthens both electrical safety audits and usage transparency.
