What's the difference between AC and DC charging?
AC charging: for daily use
AC (alternating current) charging is the common method used at home or work. Current from the grid is converted to DC by a converter inside the vehicle (the OBC) before reaching the battery. Power levels are generally low-to-medium, so a full charge can take several hours — ideal for overnight charging.
DC charging: for fast charging
In DC (direct current) charging, conversion happens inside the station and current is delivered directly to the battery. This allows much higher power levels and therefore much shorter charging times — preferred at highway rest stops and fast-charging points.
Which to use, and when
AC is better suited for daily, planned charging; DC is more appropriate when you need a fast top-up during a trip. For long-term battery health, AC charging is generally recommended for daily use.
